Why Add a Repeater?

LoRa signals travel far in open areas, but buildings, terrain, and trees reduce range. A repeater placed on a high point relays messages automatically — bridging gaps and extending your mesh coverage from a few kilometres to 10–20+ km with a good antenna.

Antenna Upgrade Tip

The included WisMesh Blade Antenna works well for getting started. For maximum range, upgrade to a McGill tuned outdoor antenna (3–9 dBi). You'll need an N-Female to SMA-RP-Male adapter to connect it. See our complete EU868 antenna guide for help choosing the right antenna.

Good, robust, but no WiFi

It appears that I can't edit or delete my previous review so here's a revised version:

First of all, this was much bigger and heavier than I expected. That's not a problem as it's robust with a larger solar panel. After an initial charge, it has maintained a battery level of 75-90% in a location where it gets only afternoon sun (when we get sun - this is Ireland, after all).

It did not have the latest Meshtastic version so I flashed it. The meshtastic.org site has no specific entry for this device so I chose the WisBlock 4631. Support confirmed that this is the correct firmware.

The main drawback is that this unit does not have WiFi. I have asked Hexaspot about this but there is no add-on module available for that. If you are (as I am) in an area where the repeater can't reach any other fixed nodes, this means it has nowhere to transmit its MQTT to, so it doesn't end up on the meshmap.net map. I ended up setting up a Heltec V3 node with WiFi so MQTT could be sent via internet. This works OK.

Updated review: nice build, with recurring problems

Unfortunately I cannot adjust my previous review (4 stars), so I'm posting a new one.

After spending a few days with two of these Wishmesh Mini Repeaters, I have run into two recurring problems:

1. The internal battery is stuck in place with weak double-sided tape. One repeater fell 1 meter onto carpet, which knocked the battery loose.

2. The RAK4631 board has excellent power consumption and send/receive capabilities, BUT... But, every few days it will stop sending and receiving. The software is still running and serial communications work fine, but the board sends and receives 0,0 packets. The only way to knock it out of this is to first fully erase and reflash it as Companion or Room, and second fully erase it again and reflash it back to Repeater.

Both my repeaters have shown this behavior. It seems to be a known problem, as it's listed as number 8 on this page -> https://www.localmesh.nl/en/meshcore-network-troubleshooting/

Perfecte repeater voor MeshCore, makkelijk te flashen via de web-flasher, geen gedoe met drivers. Geen solderwerk nodig. Grote accu met zonnepaneel, geen omkijken naar.
