Which Meshtastic Node Should You Buy? RAKwireless, Heltec and Seeed Compared

Which Meshtastic Node Should You Buy? RAKwireless, Heltec and Seeed Compared

The best Meshtastic node depends on what you want to do with it. Want to send messages straight away without soldering? Get a ready-to-use device such as the RAK WisMesh Pocket V2 or the SenseCAP T1000-E. Want to experiment on a budget? A Heltec board from around €23 is the logical place to start. And for a permanent node on your roof, pick a solar repeater.

In this guide we compare the nodes from the three brands we sell at Hexaspot: RAKwireless, Heltec and Seeed Studio (SenseCAP). Every device listed is the EU868 version, the frequency used across Europe. Almost all of them also run MeshCore.

What to look for

These six points decide which node suits you.

  • Frequency: in Europe, always buy the EU868 version. A 915 MHz node cannot talk to the European network.
  • Chip: nRF52840 or ESP32-S3. Nodes with an nRF52840 (RAK, SenseCAP, Heltec T114/T096) are frugal: they draw just a few microamps in sleep mode and last for days on a small battery. ESP32-S3 boards (Heltec V3, V4, Wireless Tracker) have Wi-Fi and are cheap, but use more power. Expect 1 to 2 days on a 3000 mAh battery.
  • Ready-to-use or bare board: a ready-to-use device has an enclosure, a battery and usually an IP rating. A bare board is cheaper, but you need to add your own battery and case.
  • GPS: useful for sharing your position or hiking. You don't need it for a fixed node on your roof.
  • Transmit power: most nodes transmit at 22 dBm. The Heltec V4, Wireless Tracker V2 and T096 reach about 28 dBm. A better antenna often gains you more range than extra power.
  • MeshCore: almost every node in this guide can be flashed with MeshCore firmware. They usually ship with Meshtastic.

RAKwireless: ready-to-use and modular

RAKwireless builds its nodes around the RAK4631 module (nRF52840 + SX1262), which makes them frugal and reliable. Hexaspot is a RAKwireless Gold partner.

  • WisMesh Pocket V2 (€99.00): the best all-rounder if you want to get going right away. It has a 3200 mAh battery, a 1.3-inch OLED screen, built-in GNSS, an IP66 enclosure and an SMA connector for a better antenna. Unbox it, pair it with the app and start messaging.
  • WisMesh Tag (€48.50): a card-sized GPS tracker with no screen and an IP66 rating. Its 1000 mAh battery lasts 2 to 3 days with GPS on, and it charges magnetically. Ideal on your bag or keyring, for kids at camp or a dog in the field.
  • WisBlock Meshtastic Starter Kit (from €27.99): a modular board for builders. It draws about 2 µA in sleep mode, and you can clip on GPS or sensors later. You add your own battery and enclosure.
  • WisMesh Repeater Mini V2 (from €99.95): a solar-powered repeater with a 3200 mAh battery and an IP67 enclosure. There is also a version with GPS (€109.95) and a 1W version that transmits at 30 dBm (€109.95).

Heltec: low-cost experimenting

Heltec makes the best-known bare LoRa boards. They ship without an enclosure or battery, which makes them ideal for tinkerers but less suited if you want a working device in your pocket straight away.

  • Heltec WiFi LoRa 32 V3 (€22.95): the classic first node, with an ESP32-S3, SX1262 and a 0.96-inch OLED screen. About 20 dBm transmit power.
  • Heltec V4 (€24.95): the same size and pinout as the V3, but with about 28 dBm transmit power and a dedicated solar panel input. For €2 more, it is now the better buy. Note: MeshCore requires the dedicated V4.3 firmware build.
  • Heltec Wireless Tracker V2 (€34.95): a V4-style board with a colour TFT screen and a dual-frequency GNSS chip. Pick this if you want GPS on an ESP32 board.
  • Heltec Mesh Node T114 (€31.95): an nRF52840 board with a 1.14-inch colour screen. It draws just 23 µA in Meshtastic's power-saving mode. Paired with a solar panel, it is a frugal base for your own solar node.
  • Heltec Mesh Node T096 (€42.95): frugal (12 µA in sleep mode), with GPS, a TFT screen and about 28 dBm transmit power. This is the Heltec that comes closest to a complete tracker.

The Heltec 3000 mAh battery fits all Heltec boards.

Seeed Studio (SenseCAP): compact and solar

Under the SenseCAP name, Seeed Studio makes compact trackers and a complete solar node. All three run on a frugal nRF52840.

  • SenseCAP Card Tracker T1000-E (€47.99): a credit-card-sized tracker just 6.5 mm thick, rated IP65. It has GPS, a buzzer and sensors for temperature, light and motion. The 700 mAh battery lasts 1 to 2 days with GPS on. Note: because of its LR1110 chip, it cannot receive messages from older SX127x nodes (such as the Heltec V2 or T-Beam V1.x).
  • Wio Tracker L1 Pro (€57.99): a handheld with a 1.3-inch OLED screen, a joystick, GPS and a solar panel input. With GPS on, the battery lasts about 2.5 days. It is cheaper than the WisMesh Pocket but has no IP rating. Currently sold out.
  • SenseCAP Solar Node P1-Pro (€119.00): a complete outdoor node with a 5 W solar panel and four 18650 cells (13,400 mAh in total). It has GPS and ships with brackets for wall and pole mounting. The large battery gives it plenty of reserve for cloudy days.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best Meshtastic node for beginners? The WisMesh Pocket V2. It is complete, waterproof and has a large battery, so there is nothing to solder or 3D-print.

What is the cheapest Meshtastic node? The Heltec V3 (€22.95) and V4 (€24.95). You do need to add your own battery and enclosure.

Heltec V3 or V4? The V4. For €2 more you get about 8 dB more transmit power and a solar input, in the same size and pinout.

Do these nodes also work with MeshCore? Yes, almost all of them. They ship with Meshtastic, and you switch firmware with the MeshCore web flasher. The Heltec V4 needs the V4.3 build.

How long does the battery last? That depends mainly on the chip. ESP32 boards last 1 to 2 days on 3000 mAh. nRF52840 trackers last 1 to 3 days with GPS on, and much longer without it.

Do I need a repeater? Only if you want to extend coverage in your area yourself. First check the Meshtastic or MeshCore map to see how many nodes are already near you.

Conclusion

Want to get started right away? Choose the WisMesh Pocket V2. Want a tracker you forget you're carrying? Choose the WisMesh Tag or the T1000-E. Want to experiment on a small budget? Start with a Heltec V4. And want to strengthen the network in your area? Put a WisMesh Repeater Mini V2 or SenseCAP P1-Pro on your roof.
